Description

“I shall tell you a great secret, my friend. Don't wait for the last judgment - it takes place every day.”
--Albert Camus

In the novel “The Stranger”, by Albert Camus, themes of existentialism guide the story through the life of a seemingly unemotional and disinterested individual. The theme that I wished to interpret through my picture was the theme of Existence before essence. In short, the theme holds the idea that humans first come into existence as empty shells, and then, as they grow, form opinions, and make choices, their “essence” is created, not that each individual has a predetermined nature, fate, or that they are governed by some other divine force. The quotations on the image show what beliefs of Camus were heavily integrated into the life of the protagonist.

The four pictures surrounding Mersault are meant to be representations of events in his life that had an impact on him, and led to the events of Part II of the novel. Going clockwise from the top left, there is a graveyard, an old man and his dog, a possessive man with his girlfriend, and a beach; these symbolize his mother’s death, Old Salamano and his dog, Raymond Sintès with his ex girlfriend, and the beach where Mersault killed a man. The green, ribbon like smoke that leads from the outside to inside his torso is his essence. In many types of art and culture, green is considered the color of life and renewal, and it is also the representation of inexperience. These are all parts of the revelation that mersault experiences at the end of part two. His realization that as he is faced with death, he can truly understand life and the inexperience he had as he was growing, leading him to renewal. The empty body shows how all humans merely exist at first, and must be filled from experience in order to live fully.
